Situated in the South Campus lobby of ArtCenter’s 1111 building, the Peter and Merle Mullin Gallery serves as a welcoming point for students, faculty, staff and the neighborhood itself.
The modest 6,300 square foot gallery space is programmed to function alternately as a fine art gallery and an automotive gallery. Inspired by the automobile, pathways run through the interior spaces, and out of the building envelope to the exterior. At the same time, curved walls form the interior gallery, the exterior courtyard, and the parking and garden areas beyond.
A key design feature along one of these curving pathways, is the twelve-foot-high steel ‘fin wall’ that separates the gallery courtyard from the street, which includes a lenticular effect that engages the public along Arroyo Parkway. The presence of this gallery on the street, at this historic nexus in Pasadena and the gesture of the fin wall signifies and reinforces the presence of ArtCenter in the urban and cultural landscape of the city.
The Peter and Merle Mullin Gallery was designed by Darin Johnstone Architects.

We realized the project needed to be turned inside out to function as a gallery, a signifier for the school and a cultural destination in the city of Pasadena.
