Chair, Graduate and Undergraduate Graphic Design

The Chair of the Graphic Design department reports to the Provost, provides vision, leadership and is broadly responsible for ensuring educational excellence and the ongoing successful operations of the Graphic Design educational program.  Responsibilities include planning, oversight, and operational management of the department’s curriculum, budget, and initiatives as well as organizational leadership for staff, faculty, and students. The Chair is responsible for defining the mission of the department in alignment with the College’s mission and strategic plan.

The Chair is responsible for producing and operating a student-centered ongoing 5-term MFA degree and an 8-term BFA degree educational program that graduates students appropriately prepared to receive the department’s respective degree. The Chair works to create a program that will ensure, support, inform, and enrich students’ learning and studio practices, intellectual development, critical thinking and communication skills. The Chair is responsible for operating a program that responds to the needs and goals of a culturally diverse student and faculty community and for keeping the program relevant to the rapidly changing respective professional fields.

The Chair is an organizational manager and supervisor with administrative staff and faculty as direct reports. The Chair administers various staff employment related functions such as reviews, hours approvals, job searches, etc. The Chair oversees department budgets and purchasing as well as class scheduling and planning. The Chair works to manage, identify, and recruit faculty and potential applicants. The Chair works to develop curricular content with each faculty to ensure alignment of class outcomes with program outcomes.

The Chair is the lead educator in the department. The Chair is responsible for staying connected to and relevant to both the curriculum and the professional fields related to the department’s graduates by staying actively involved with both. The Chair is expected to engage in practices that will keep their perspectives relevant to changes in the field, to teach if appropriate, and engage with students and the curriculum in a manner that ensures they are empathetic of staff, students and faculty in the context of ongoing operations.

The Chair should be an excellent communicator, a good listener, and receptive to multiple points of view and ideas. The Chair must lead and make decisions that maintain high ethical standards and demonstrate respect for faculty, staff, and students. The Chair collaborates with staff and other department leaders to achieve departmental and institutional goals.

The Chair of Graphic Design works to achieve departmental and institutional goals in partnership with college: Admissions; Enrollment Services; Faculty Affairs; Student Affairs; Educational Partnerships, Study Away; Development; Alumni Relations; Marketing and Communications; Facilities; the Library; Human Resources; and the Office of the President.

Reports to: Provost

FLSA status: Exempt

  • At least 10 years of Professional and/or academic experience demonstrating ability to lead educational excellence in the Graphic Design field of study and practice.
  • College degree in Graphic Design or related field from an accredited college or university
  • The ability to develop effective curriculum appropriate to the Graphic Design field of study and practice
  • Ability to develop and maintain valuable working relationships with educational partners in companies, alumni, educational institutions and /or other organizations relevant to the department
  • Strong presentation, and communication skills — verbal, written, and visual.
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks in parallel that require close attention to detail within stringent deadlines.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion and recognizes the confidential nature of ArtCenter business
  • Must be able to work with and understand our culturally diverse student and faculty body with their needs and goals
  • Demonstrated experience in and a commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within Art Center’s diverse communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Graphic Design or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Experience and knowledge of NASAD and WASC accreditation
  • Affiliation with industry organizations such as AIGA, CUMULUS and ico-D

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for leadership in developing the department's programs within the mission of the College
  • Define and continually improve the Graphic Design program learning outcomes
  • Define and continually improve the Graphic Design curriculum and pedagogy
  • Manage department operations with success within the department operating budget
  • Assign faculty and staff course and work loads
  • Oversees recruitment, hiring, orientation, training and supervision of departments’ faculty and staff; oversee performance evaluation process, ensuring consistent use of all applicable policies and procedures; counsel, discipline and makes recommendations in terminations, as required
  • Build department community through practices such as department meetings
  • Ensure the concurrency and efficacy of curricular documentation including syllabi
  • Supervise department staff and student workers; work with staff to maintain essential department records, equipment and other assets
  • Oversee program review and assessment to ensure timely preparation of required documentation in keeping with general higher education best practices
  • Mentor and advise students on educational and professional goals, including add/drop, waive/sub, independent study, internship and other policy-specific approvals
  • Create content for ongoing promotions and external communications related to the department
Internal Partnerships
  • Work with Institutional Research, Academic Advising and other student support functions to ensure student success and retention
  • Work with Admissions to determine annual and term-by-term enrollment goals, financial aid and department scholarship strategies, and to recruit, review and admit new students (including transfer credit awards) coming into Graphic Design
  • Work with Institutional Research, Academic Advising and other student support functions to ensure student success and retention
  • Work with Educational Partnerships and/or Designmatters for Sponsored Studios or special initiatives involving Graphic Design students and/or faculty
  • Work with Career + Professional Development for student internships and industry recruitment
  • Work with Study Away for student international study programs and other study abroad opportunities
  • Work with Alumni Relations on strategic institutional alumni initiatives
  • Work with Development on department-specific fundraising, special programming, events and scholarship development opportunities
  • Work with Marketing and Communications on department-specific media and communication strategies and materials
  • Work with Sustainability Initiatives on strategic educational initiatives and department-specific research and course/curriculum development

  • Serve on educational or institutional committees. Serve as Co-chair of the Chairs’ Council Represent ACCD at outside events / conferences as necessary and appropriate
  • Ensure compliance with all institutional and departmental policies
  • Attend college-wide events as appropriate. Many of these events are outside of traditional office hours in the evenings and on weekends
  • Attend Graduation and associated events such as recruiting days
  • Attend and engage in industry-driven and alumni events involving Graphic Design
  • Engage in projects or new initiatives requested by the Provost or President

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time viewing computer monitor; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is regular exposure to fumes, dust and noise.

Physical: The position is generally sedentary. Employees sit most of the time, but may walk or stand for brief periods of time. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 20 pounds); to operate modern office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. International and Domestic travel by car and airline and overnight travel is required.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
