Transmedia Graphic Designer

The Design Office is ArtCenter’s award-winning in-house graphic design studio. We partner with departments throughout the College to produce design for screen and print with the goal of raising ArtCenter’s visibility to external audiences, and are responsible for establishing and maintaining the College’s graphic identity standards. The Graphic Designer designs a variety of digital and analog communications for the College from concept to completion, including websites, electronic communications, HTML email campaigns, web-based advertising, design for social media platforms and video titles, as well as some printed materials and environmental graphics. The Graphic Designer works under the direction of the Creative Director and the Art Director/Senior Designer, and also collaborates closely with other team members including other designers, editors and production staff. The ideal candidate will have experience in front-end web development, a strong appreciation for the technical aspects of digital work, and an interest in the creative possibilities in coding.

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from an accredited college or institution
  • Minimum 3–5 years of professional experience in the field
  • Expertise in core graphic design principles (typography, form, color, composition, imagery, etc.)
  • Knowledge of typography, color, production, graphic design and design systems and responsive design
  • Creative thinker who can provide usable and aesthetically appropriate solutions
  • Ability to work within established design and identity guidelines
  • Organized and methodical with files (both digital and supporting paperwork)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; must be detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritizing to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and to be able  to work independently and in a team
  • Proficiency with HTML/XHTML, HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript, and experience with cross-browser development
  • Familiarity with theming for content management systems
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite software (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) and Microsoft Office
  • Experience with print production, prepress and print supervision
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff
  • A commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within ArtCenter’s diverse communities
  • Ability to handle all information with tact and discretion and recognizes the confidential nature of ArtCenter business
  • Professional portfolio is required for consideration

Essential Functions

Operational – 95%

  • Develop integrated design solutions in alignment with the visual identity of the College
  • Work through design process from concept to development and refinement
  • Collaborate with staff and freelance designers, editors, and print and digital production staff.
  • Collaborate with photographers and illustrators as needed
  • Work closely with partners/clients as needed throughout the design process
  • Catalogs and files all materials in a logical and easily accessible manner; ensures they are continuously up to date
  • Creatively seek out new products and maintain cutting edge industry knowledge
  • Works on special projects, initiatives, promotions and other programs as needed  

Marginal (Non-essential) Job Functions — 5%

  • Participate in college committees
  • Maintain memberships and active involvement in applicable professional organizations
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time viewing computer monitor; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the work environment, there is regular exposure to fumes, chemicals, dust and noise.

Physical: The position is generally sedentary. Employees sit most of the time, but may walk or stand for brief periods of time. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 20 pounds); to operate modern office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information. This position also requires occasional lifting, transporting and operating video equipment including tripods, lighting units, cameras and sound gear.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
