Faculty Director of English Language Learning

For more than 80 years, Art Center has had an international reputation for its rigorous, transdisciplinary curriculum, faculty of professionals, strong ties to industry and a commitment to socially responsible design. We are an independent, nonprofit, four-year college offering a Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in 11 specialized programs, and graduate degrees in seven art and design disciplines.


ArtCenter College of Design is seeking a full-time EL instructor and faculty director to engage with and oversee our growing English Learner program. Applicants should demonstrate a capacity for teaching in academic and studio environments, an interest in collaborating in different pedagogical configurations, and should be able to articulate a vision for English Language learner pedagogy and support at ArtCenter.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in TESOL/TEFL, applied linguistics, or a related field
  • Successful language teaching experience at the college level
  • Experience collaborating with College Faculty, Staff, and Administration
  • Understanding of student learning outcome assessment in higher education


Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of teaching language at college level
  • Have a background in teaching English for art & design purposes
  • International teaching experience or experience working with international English language learners

Essential Functions

  • Full-time English Language Instructor (ELL) with some administrative responsibilities as a faculty director
  • Oversee the undergraduate writing center
  • Help plan, develop, and implement a graduate student component for EL
  • Have administrative responsibility for the Design Culture Immersion (summer intensive) program and other initiatives/special projects
  • Interface with studio departments for ELL needs
  • Oversee the writing placement test, administered to all incoming students (3-times a year)

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office and classroom setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time viewing computer monitor; interactions with other individuals.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office and classroom setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight (up to 20 pounds); to operate modern office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to perform activities such as preparing and reading reports, viewing a computer terminal and other normal office work with or without correction.

Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in the course of normal office communication or exchange ideas with or without correction.
