Biography

Matthew Frost is a member of the Robotics Systems Staff at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and has extensive experience designing, building, and testing Robotic Systems for Earth operations and Space exploration. He has worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory since 2007 and is currently the Cognizant Engineer for the M2020 mission’s Robotic Arm. Prior NASA/JPL work includes the role of Lead Mechanical Engineer for RoboSimian, an apelike disaster response robot. Other projects include lead roles on ATHLETE, the All-Terrain Hex-Limbed Extra-Terrestrial Explorer, a wheel on limb prototype robot designed for exploration of extreme environments and LEMUR, a micro-spined climbing robot. Prior to his tenure at NASA, Matthew worked on various robotic projects at Evolution Robotics, now part of the iRobot corporation. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, with an emphasis on design, from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Matthew has been teaching How Things Work at ArtCenter since 2016. He enjoys exploring mechanism design and sharing his love of engineering and science with others. In the winter, he spends his free time snowboarding, while in the summer, he works on cars and explores their limits at local racetracks.
