COVID-19: Update 21

As the College transitions to a distance learning and remote working environment to help curb the spread of COVID-19 for the remainder of the Spring term, it is important that, as a community, we continue to adhere to health and wellness at home.

It is imperative that all individuals—students, faculty and staff regardless of age, overall health or travel destination—take appropriate precautions in their day-to-day lives to minimize exposure. This includes social distancing, washing your hands often, covering your cough or sneeze, staying home when you are sick, consulting a doctor as soon as you feel ill and avoid gatherings. If individuals ignore these recommendations and expose themselves to the virus, you create an exponentially greater risk to those around you. Recent updates from the LA County Public Health Department advise that the health advisories apply to individuals of all ages.

Any individual who has traveled domestically or internationally must self-quarantine for a minimum of 14 days commencing with the date of your arrival home. The virus is highly contagious and has a 14-day incubation period.  Therefore, actively monitoring your own health during this period is vital.  Contact your medical provider if you should develop any symptoms.  Staying home reduces the risk of exposure to others.

As you are working or studying remotely, we encourage you to explore different coping strategies. Take regular breaks from the daily news cycle; eat well, hydrate, exercise and get plenty of sleep; make time for hobbies and other enjoyable activities; and most of all, don’t let social distancing prohibit you from connecting with others via phone, text, email and social media.

College administrators and faculty are available to answer questions and provide guidance. While we are applying social distancing during this time, departmental meetings can still occur via Highfive, Zoom or conference call. Questions about your existing classes or coursework should be directed to your Department Chair, instructor or other staff members. Student services, including the Center for the Student Experience, the Center for Academic Advising and Success, the Financial Aid Office, Enrollment Services and others all remain available to answer questions remotely as determined by individual offices and staff members.

As stated previously, we recognize that COVID-19 and, now, the increasing sense of isolation may be causing stress or anxiety for people in our community. Students in need of emotional support are encouraged to contact the Center for the Student Experience to consult with a campus mental health counselor. Staff and faculty should consult with our Employee Assistance Program.

It is important for Individuals to stay actively involved in their own education regarding the pandemic as the situation changes daily. General information about the local COVID-19 outbreak can be obtained from the Pasadena Public Health Department and the L.A. County Department of Public Health. Please also continue to monitor your ArtCenter email for ongoing updates from the College.
