Fractal Views

A three-part series of street-view, window exhibitions

Oct. 17, 2020 – January 15, 2021

ArtCenter Exhibitions presents Fractal Views, a three-part series of street-view window exhibitions that will run until January 15, 2021. Organized by Love’s Remedies, ArtCenter DTLA’s artist-in-residence through Spring of 2021, Fractal Views is an activation of the site’s West 4th Street facade in absence of public access during the pandemic. Originally planned programming (micro-residencies and exhibitions) within the site itself has given way to this modified form, as current constraints manifest a continual enactment of the Love’s Remedies framework - making tangible and accessible the multi-directional commitments to everyone involved from institution to curator to artist and back again.

Fractal Views

October 17 - November 5 “Package Nocturnes” curated by Beth Fiedorek

November 14 - December 11 “Reconociendo,” Eric Magaña

December 18 - January 15 “Reconstructing a Recurring Dream,” Narges Noroozi

Currently on view, “Package Nocturnes” examines the relationship of creative production within a capitalist economy based on easy disposability. Curated by artist Beth Fiedorek, this group exhibition showcases artists united by ambivalent relationships. Peering inside a world that appears fully formed, the artists sift through its garbage and highlight how desire and access can be nefariously mediated but also understood and possibly cherished. Featuring work by Sharon Barnes, Will Bruno, Cameron Cameron, Beth Fiedorek, Teresa Flores, Rochele Gomez, Luke Harnden, Amanda Horowitz, David Muenzer, Gozié Ojini, Assaf Shaham, Yoshie Sakai and Jazmín Urrea.

Beginning November 14, Eric Magaña presents “Reconociendo.” Featuring both the medium of photography and an installation using handmade adobe bricks made by Magaña, “Reconociendo” takes the lineage and persona of Martin Barbosa, Magaña’s deceased grandfather, as a departure point to investigate the interrelation between locality, labor, politics, agriculture, heritage and Barbosa’s own battle with Alzheimers.

In December, multi-disciplinary artist and scenic designer Narges Noroozi creates a window installation exploring how the human psyche reconstructs reality into dreams, and vice versa, often in response to the unexpected. Recreating the scene of a recurring dream that the artist has experienced this year, Noroozi utilizes elements of bathroom architecture, water and soil, investigating ideas of repetition and cleanliness.
