Rosemarie Piccioni Named Associate Provost of Online Education

College to Launch ArtCenter Online Continuing Education Courses

ArtCenter College of Design Provost Karen Hofmann announced today that, after a comprehensive search, the College has named Rosemarie Piccioni as its first-ever associate provost of online education. Piccioni kicked off her new role at the College on November 5, 2018.

“Rose has the ideal combination of what ArtCenter needs for this leadership position: depth of knowledge, breadth of diverse professional experience and passion for the arts, creativity and education,” said Hofmann.

With the recent dedication of the new Bruce Heavin Media Production Studio on the ArtCenter campus, Piccioni will utilize her experience and expertise to launch ArtCenter Online in early 2019. ArtCenter Online is a new initiative to offer entry level courses for future students, continuing professional education for alumni and courses of general interest to the public.

The new Bruce Heavin Media Production Studio was established to support online learning and create greater awareness of the College through this more accessible educational platform. The studio boasts a state-of-the-art film stage, sound isolation rooms, editing bays and a viewing lounge. While open to students, the studio is intended to support faculty and administrators in delivering online courses.

“I’m so pleased to be joining this vibrant educational community,” said Piccioni. “The ArtCenter spirit of innovation and creativity fosters collaboration and provides a rich palette for creating exemplary teaching and learning experiences.”

In this new role, Piccioni will provide the creative, strategic and academic vision for ArtCenter’s emerging online initiative, work closely with department chairs, Public Programs, Admissions, Marketing and Communications, and Development. She will also provide oversight for the office of Digital Teaching and Learning, which is responsible for the management of the College’s Learning Management System, instructional design and technology, and innovative/emerging educational technology. Additionally, she will be responsible for continued oversight and development of the Heavin Production Studio.

“ArtCenter Online is the new portal that will provide online access to the deep learning experiences that ArtCenter is known for globally,” said Piccioni. “We will be creating opportunities for art and design learners across the state, country and the world to engage with our faculty, student colleagues and industry partners to learn, and then become active leaders in creating the future.”

Piccioni has more than 25-years of experience leading the development of emotionally engaging, motivating, rich media learning environments. Her higher education experience includes launching the Penn State Video Learning Network and, as the director of UCLA Extension and UCLA Global Online’s teaching teams, charting the course for both synchronous and asynchronous online learning experiences for 3,000 students learning from more than 2,000 instructors in 50,000 online courses.

Her early career was in music education, developing and producing educational programming for The Philadelphia Orchestra. She went on to work at the Walt Disney Company, spearheading a number of new initiatives, including the educational programming for the inaugural launch of Disney Cruise Line’s the Magic, Wonder, and Castaway Cay. She also developed innovative online music education programming including “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra,” a Carnegie Hall Listening Adventure®.

Piccioni holds a BS and MM in music education from Duquesne University and a M Ed and Ed D in instructional technology and media from Teachers College, Columbia University.
