ArtCenter Dialogues: Darby English in Conversation with Bruce Hainley

With disciplinary allegiances to cultural studies and modernist art history, Darby English studies the roles art plays in the process and experience of cultural change. He is the author of To Describe a Life: Notes from the Intersection of Art and Race Terror (Yale UP, March 2019), 1971: A Year in the Life of Color (Chicago, 2016), and How to See a Work of Art in Total Darkness (MIT, 2007). English’s short-form writing has appeared in ArtBulletin, Artforum, The Guardian, The International Review of African-American Art and other venues.

Darby will be in conversation with Bruce Hainley, Associate Chair of Graduate Art.

The ArtCenter Dialogues—a Toyota Motor Company Endowed Lecture Series programmed by ArtCenter's Humanities and Sciences Department—provides a forum for eminent guests from a wide variety of art, design and educational backgrounds to inspire creativity, promote thoughtful discussion and broaden perspectives. Participants have an opportunity to engage the community in a flexible number of educational platforms, including lectures, panel discussions, workshops and collaborative endeavors.
