The Hoffmitz Milken Center for Typography (HMCT) South Campus Gallery presents In Verbis Artis (In Words Art), a group exhibition curated by John David O’Brien. Open to the public and free of charge, it runs February 22 through May 23, 2020.

In Verbis Artis explores the relationship between typography, design, and fine art through the work of Los Angeles-based artists Gajin Fujita, Alexandra Grant, Mark Steven Greenfield, Jason Manley, Rebecca Ripple, Steve Roden, and Jody Zellen. Within the context of each artist's voice, the exhibition examines the fluidity of written words, addressing the myriad potential interpretations of language at this critical time for communication throughout contemporary culture. The work converges here to open a dialogue into the way we understand letterforms, and how artists can subvert them in the realization of their aesthetic vision. According to O’Brien, “Taken as a group of works, In Verbis Artis is meant to stimulate viewers to think about letterforms freed from the confines of solely conveying meaning, and to recognize how the relative inherency of languages can be ignored, especially when related to questions of societal import.”

In Verbis Artis, organized and presented by the HMCT, is made possible by the generous support of the Lowell Milken Family Foundation.
