Biography

Diana Thater is one of the leading artists of her generation. Working in film, video and installation, she has been an innovator in her medium for 20 years. Thater works with color, shape, silence and image and literally uses video and film to construct an architecture of ideas. It is especially to Thater's credit that her sculptural, architectural installations have extended the scope of images in art. She is constantly expanding into new spaces - real, artistic and intellectual - while other artists in her medium follow. - Peter Pakesch, Director, Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz, Austria

A selected list of Thater's solo exhibitions includes the Kunsthaus Graz, Austria; Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany; Dia Center for the Arts, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Vienna Secession; MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles; Witte de With, Rotterdam and the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. Since 1990, her work has been featured in group exhibitions including three Whitney Biennials, the Sculpture Project in Munster and the Carnegie International. Thater received her BA in Art History from New York University and her MFA from ArtCenter College of Design. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including an NEA Grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the James D. Phelan Art Award in Film and Video.
