To create his dense, imaginative imagery, Tansey sources a trove of visual material—his own photographs, along with clippings from magazines, journals and newspapers—and repeatedly manipulates their forms to create a collage that serves as a preliminary study for his paintings. Embracing the ambiguity and complexity of our time, Tansey’s labor-intensive compositions are full of visual puns and references, inviting viewers on a visual and metaphorical adventure. Tansey has exhibited his paintings in solo shows across the globe—from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to Switzerland’s Kunsthalle Basel to the Seattle Art Museum. His work has also been included in the collections of some of the country’s most prestigious museums including the Walker Art Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
