“By late ’69, I was 28 or 29, and spaced out. I created ‘Johnny Face’ as a reflection of the ‘60s for those who had been through that decade. I sent it around, and it later became a billboard—224 billboards across L.A. and Orange County. There were these people who would work with the big agencies, in advertising, in L.A., and you would see them in the streets, and they would come by our studio, and see ‘Johnny Face.’ If they were at all nervous and insecure, that face would just ignite them. The ones who were very confident loved it and smiled and saw this sort of enthusiasm in it.”
