Design Culture Immersion

International Students, Do You Want to Start Your Studies Early?

Are you looking to get a head start on your education? Join ArtCenter’s Design Culture Immersion (DCI), a six-week program designed for incoming international students.

With DCI, you have the opportunity to take a Fall Term course early; refine your art and design practice and vocabulary; and build your confidence in written and spoken English. You’ll also have the chance to familiarize yourself with the College’s culture and explore the wonders of the Greater Los Angeles area.

Taking place before the Fall term, DCI combines a Design 1 studio course—a 3-credit course that fulfills your first-term foundation Design 1 requirement—with a 3-credit English Language Intensive course that will prepare you for the English placement test that all students take in the Fall.

Available to students from all majors (with the exception of Environmental Design), classes (Monday–Friday) are taught by ArtCenter’s renowned faculty and include workshops, cultural field trips, group activities and College events. Advisors and other staff crucial to your academic success will also visit the classroom to help introduce you to the College’s campuses and its many resources.

Don’t miss this opportunity to develop a solid foundation in major design principles and build your confidence and ability in the English language.

DCI Includes:

  • Design I - Develop a solid foundation in this hands-on studio course. Practice major design principles while refining yoru art and design vocabulary in this 3-credit course.
  • English Language Intensive - Build your confidence in written and spoken English and prepare for the required placement test in this 3-credit course.
  • Student Life - Familiarize yourself with the College campus and its famous culture of critique; meet advisors and staff crucial to your academic success.
  • Explore Los Angeles - Take cultural field trips to visit the wonders of the Greater L.A. region; discover the wealth of resources available to artists and designers.

How will DCI help my transition into ArtCenter?

DCI gives you the opportunity to take the Fall Term course Design 1 (3 credits) early; this course counts toward your required studio credits. The English Language Intensive course (3 credits) will prepare you for the English placement test all students take in the Fall, potentially helping you enter at an advanced level. These two classes have been developed in tandem to help you understand design concepts and language and prepare for critiques and presentations. And if you pass the Design 1 class, you'll have a lighter course load during your first official term!

Our new Design Culture Immersion program helps international students learn the skills they need to excel in the world of design.
