Frances Lazare is an art historian and curator whose research focuses on the histories of abstract painting in the 19th through 21st centuries. At the University of Southern California (USC), she is completing a dissertation on queer and feminist sociability in and around the New York School of Painters titled “Intimate Abstraction.” Grants from the Terra Foundation for American Art and the New York Public Library have generously supported this project. She has held curatorial positions at the Menil Collection, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Norton Simon Museum and taught postwar art history at USC, Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and ArtCenter College of Design.
