Richard Hawkins (b. 1961, Mexia TX) is an American artist known for his sculptures, collages, and paintings. His themes range from haunted dollhouses to Classical statuary, the butoh of Tatsumi Hijikata, the drawings of Antonin Artaud and paintings of Forrest Bess. Based in Los Angeles his works are held in the collections of the Whitney Musuem, Art Institute, Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Solo museum presentations include Tate Liverpool, Consortium, Dijon and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Hawkins’s work springs from various indulgences of high and low culture: a fraught yet fruitful combination of historical research and boyish obsessions—all fed through the filter of his own identity as an old school gay.
