Ellen researches the relationship between art, science and materials, focusing on design and the material culture of China. Dr. Huang earned a BA from Yale University and a PhD from the University of California, San Diego. She has published for museum catalogues and academic journals, taught and researched in Taipei, Beijing, and Shanghai and held positions at university art museums as a curator (Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, Ackland Art Museum at UNC). Exhibitions include Ink Worlds (2018), Earthly Hollows: Cave and Kiln (2018), The Buddha’s Word (2018), and Clouding (2021). Huang has been supported by numerous institutions and foundations, including the Berkeley Chancellor for Academic Diversity and the Korean National Museum. Dr. Huang is an Associate Professor at ArtCenter, where she teaches the history of objects and material culture from global frames, giving particular attention to the impact of translation on cross-cultural understandings of making.
