David Lawson is a Los Angeles-based Visual Effects Supervisor who has worked on feature films for 35 years. Since earning an MFA in Animation at USC in 1995, he has been dedicated to lighting, compositing and final look-of-picture in live-action digital FX and animation. Studio gigs have included Warner Digital, Sony Pictures Imageworks, and 14 years as CG Supervisor and Lead Lighting Artist in the Dreamworks lighting department on such titles as Bee Movie, Puss In Boots and Trolls. Most recently, he has served as studio-side VFX Supervisor for Feature Animation at Netflix, overseeing lighting approvals and color grading on Back To The Outback, The Monkey King and Thelma The Unicorn. David lives in nearby Altadena, where he hikes in the Angeles National Forest and practices the art of baking sourdough bread. He has been teaching Lighting Fundamentals at Art Center since 2024.
