Spring 2022 Planning

Dear Students,

We are delighted to share that our current Spring 2022 plan sees us returning to on-campus instruction and 24-hour student access without capacity restrictions. We have approval from the City of Pasadena to continue our full return to on-campus operations and experiences. This includes a return to normal operating hours for shops, labs, stages, library and other facilities to provide the hands-on making experiences ArtCenter College of Design is known for. Please note: All safety protocols will remain in place and must be adhered to or else we fail in our commitment to the city and will lose the privileges of being in-person.

Our planning is shaped by guiding principles articulated by ArtCenter President Lorne Buchman as follows:

  • Offer the fullest on-campus experience possible.
  • Learn to live with public health restrictions and protocols.
  • Focus on educational excellence in determining course modalities.

Given these principles and based on our commitment to educational excellence, we will expand campus access and offer the following (please note that course modalities will vary from department to department).

  • A majority of classes fully in-person
  • Some multimodal classes that will be a combination of in-person and online
  • Some classes using remote instruction where it is most effective pedagogically or when it enables us to open the classroom for world-class artists, designers and industry leaders outside of Southern California to teach

As ArtCenter heads back to campus for Spring 2022, we will continue to evolve our teaching practices based on learning outcomes observed during the last two years (and in the terms to come). In determining which classes are offered in person and which are offered remotely, ArtCenter is also looking at emerging industry and professional practices to prepare students for the hybrid future of creative work.

Each department will clarify your program’s course offerings prior to Spring 2022 registration, which begins November 29. Please contact your Department Chair or administrators with questions or concerns about your specific curriculum.

I look forward to seeing you all on campus this Spring.

All my best,

Karen Hofmann
